It keeps getting worse

In April 2024, Off-Space School-performative Screenings #84 hosted a mini-festival inspired by Diana Barbosa Gil’s documentary Es wird immer ärger (Caliwood). FLINTA artists and researchers from Brazil, Portugal, and Austria came together for performances, readings, film screenings, and discussions centered on themes from the film: migration, family ties, identity, climate change, and the challenges faced by artists, while also challenging Eurocentric perspectives.

We explored the potential of depicting the realities of the Global South and reflected on our interactions with the camera. Additionally, we shared perspectives as queer migrant artists navigating uncertain circumstances in Europe. Participants included Lisbon’s Frame Colectivo, offering a feminist perspective on urban space; dancer and researcher Tiago Amate with his project Cartas ao Sul, addressing monument decolonization in Lisbon; artist Miguel Antonio Domingues with the project ONIONS, exploring identity as a layered construct without singular origin; and Vienna-based artists Vik Bayer and Michael Reindel critically examining ecosystems worldwide in their project Material Notions of Seeding.
